I can rotate my Ik'd arm but I cannot translate it, I know it is possible to translate it, so how do I do it?

By translate, do you mean the effector (wrist) or the entire arm, as though it detaches from the body?
1. If you can move you effector, it is probably constrained to something, that has it's display off.
2. If you are trying to move the entire arm, like it was a single object, you need to select the entire branch. If the arm is you entire tree, just select the entire hiearchy with the right mouse button. If it is a child of the rest of the character, then click with the middle mouse button on the ground null (first object in skeleton). This will highlight just the arm skeleton.

I mean the wrist, instead of having to rotate the Ik'd arm to animate I could also translate the wrist to animate.
But I think I just fixed it, I positioned contraint the wrong nulls on my wrist and hand to the control object.
Simple mistake wouldn't you say.........

If you are trying to constrain an effector to a null, here is a little trick I use, so the effector doesn't have to move. Effect/Nullifier works, but it creates another Null at 0,0,0 and makes it the parent.

Anyway, here is a simple solution.
1. Create you null anywhere. Go ahead and make it the correct size.
2. Select the Null and use a positional constraint to place it on the effector.
3. Now use Constraint/Relax to remove the constraint.
4. Select the effector and use the positional constraint to constrain it to the null.
That's it.

This technique is a quick way to get objects to line up etc. Just remember to relax the constraint afterwards.
