Hehe, one of the probs that come up again and again...
That is what i do:
i create new views for every view in which i use an image plane (Panels > Orthographic > New). Further on i work in the new views.
An other guy wrote that he creates a simple plane and assigns his images to it as a colormap. Then he puts the plane into a seperate layer. This has the advantage that you can turn on or off the "image plane" quickly by toogling on or off the layer
