Image plane resolution?

Does anyone know of a method of increasing the resolution if imageplanes. I am using detailed images to model and the images are very grainy regardless of the resolution of the source image.

I know how to create the image planes and have done it many times but they are allways very grainy. I have scaned the image at 600 dpi, but the resulting image plane is very pixelated.
