Image Planes Cause MAYA to slow down

I'm working on the tutorial on Chapter 3 of the mastering MAYA book, and the second I add Image planes....Maya becomes so slow I can barely work with it...

What gives???

If I delete the image planes I'm fine...

My Computer is running dual 333MHZ Intel Pentium II's

And I have 512 Meg of RAM

Also 18Gig of free Hard drive space

And I Fire GL Graphics card

Thanks for any suggestions

it's probably your graphics card. Maya slows down when i'm using my HP 700Mhz 512 megs with an Oxygen card, but doesn't slow down at all on my HP dual 500Mhz 512 megs with FX6 with texture acceleration when using image planes. Similar machine...different graphics.

The FireGL isn't a very high end card, and that is most likely your problem in slowing down when using image planes.

I ahve the same problem , I'm working with an oxygen 202 wich is fine till i work with an image plane , then slowdown city / even though the files an .iff so no converting , and there're each only 40k. new graphics card soon!! was weighting for a new computer , but mayb I'll get a card first. Also work on an old O2 , same problem .

Ever notice that in perspective view everything is fast. It only slows in up, front and side views. Guess they use some sort of OpenGL feature unsupported by your cards to blit the image plane to non-perspective view?

Do you guys know if The Elsa Gloria II works well with MAYA

ie....no slow downs with image planes???

Has anybody used a gforce card yet???

Cards that slow down in ortho views with image planes usually indicates that the card does NOT support hardware overlays.

I find it amusing that alot of the "pro" cards out there can't do what a old Solid Impact based chipset could do for YEARS.

The Quadro/Gloria 2 is said to support hardware overlay but Have not confirmed it personally [it better for the price increase over the geforce.]

Btw the Creative Labs Ge-Force is now offically softimage certified... thats good news.. considering how soft is more picky then maya when it comes to opengl support.

Do u try optimise(index colour) the image file?
I have problem to open the files in CD.It prompted me "corrupted file structure".
what should I do?

I've noticed a slowdown with the Gloria II using image planes when compared to other systems, it could be just the drivers since they have yet to release a Maya specific profile... It was pretty horrid, basicly unusable with a refresh of 2-5 fps !! In all other aspects ( whithin Maya ) the card blew away the other machines.

The file was a 7 meg image plane...

SGI 320, 48 megs VRAM --- Fastest, virtually realtime.
Octane w/SI + 4megs TRAM --- slower, but not distracting.
02 w/256 RAM --- Obviously the toaster is not the champ but still better than G2.
NT, Dual PIII, 512 + RAM, Gloria II-- =(

this is really odd,
I have an oxygen vx1, and have never noticed slowdown,

your speaking of the image plan that you create
as a background image through a camera right?

Although I dont think i've tried it with 7mb files
usually my maps are around 1mb orso.

But i see no slowdown whatsoever, it's as if
there is no imageplane there at all!

oxygen Vx1 support hardware overlay then ? if so , then thats a great card....

I have a VX1 as well, and imageplanes does slow down, sometimes considerably.
If i adjust the contrast it slows to a crawl, taking several seconds for the screen to update.

 Yep, it was one image file with both a front and side orthographic view...

I've found that Maya has some trouble with image planes. The best way to turn it off so it doesn't influence viewport playback is to turn the map from image to texture instead of turning display from rgb to none. This way Maya completely ignores the image file.
