You forgot something!
When you place an image as rotoscope, you have a new icon on the viewport's top bar. This icon is a magnifying glass. When you click on this icon, its locks the rotoscope's scaling. It means that if you zoom/dolly-in, the rotoscope image enlarges, always keeping the right proportion with the objects. In other words, it does the same thing as the planes method, but it's rotoscoped.
