Image Planes / Rotoscopy scaling

Hi guys - I wanted to make images in the rotoscopy view scale as though they were attached to the grid.

I could do this in maya simply by not having the image plane attached to the camera. I can't find where to do this in XSI..

Any suggestions would be fantastic

There are two methods to do this.

1. Rotoscope the image in the viewport. If you do this you need to use the "z" key to zoom instead of the more logical "s" key. This is very confusing for me and I'm always messing it up so I prefer method 2.

2. Greate a grid plane and apply your reference image as a texture. Switch the camera to texture mode. Scale the image plane (grid with image texture) to your liking. Put the image plane on it's own layer. In the viewport pulldown menu deselect "override object properties."

At the bottom of the screen click on the "Painters Pallet icon." Under Display types click the "T" button. Select the image plane by clicking on it. This will allows you to have mixed display types in the viewports, clicking the "T" (texture) buttons will make certain that the image plane is always texture rendered. In the layer settings make the image plane non-selectable. It also allows you to quickly turn the layer's visibility off and on.

It sounds like a lot of work but after the first time you do it, it moves quickly but more importantly you have a level of control over the image plane that you don't get by rotoscoping.

You forgot something!

When you place an image as rotoscope, you have a new icon on the viewport's top bar. This icon is a magnifying glass. When you click on this icon, its locks the rotoscope's scaling. It means that if you zoom/dolly-in, the rotoscope image enlarges, always keeping the right proportion with the objects. In other words, it does the same thing as the planes method, but it's rotoscoped.

The magnifying glass only works for me when I pan, when I zoom the object scales but the background plane stays the same causing them to lose alignment. Roger Rosa eludes to this problem in his video tutorial. As long as you remember to pan and zoom using the "Z" key instead of the"S" you'll be fine.

I personally like the grids better because I do a lot of my work in the perspective viewport where I can have the two planes visable working at a higher resolution.
