I have a Geforce2 GTS patched with rivatuner of course! However when importing image planes i am experiencing some problems... In all views EXCEPT perspective maya is very very slow when dollying, or tracking in the window!I Its so slow that i cant work with my project.... However in Perspective view all run smoothly...Dollying, or tracking, or...or...! I have enabled hardaware overlays...and unified back/depth buffer...if this help u!
I faced with the same problem as well. Try doing this, it helped me to solve the issue...
Let's say you created an image plane for the Side Camera. The thing slows down like hell ! I know But after setting the image plane, re-create a new orthographic view from the options. The thing solves the issue and it's smooth again like before...
E-mail me or send a message to me if it doesn't work. I'm sure we can figure it out somehow...
The problem is with Windows XP i guess... I've downloaded the latest Detonator drivers from nVidia for my Creative TNT2 32 MB graphics adapter. When i use this driver as the system display driver, Windows restarts itself without prompting anything... When i restore the old driver (The one comes with XP) it runs but terribly slow... I can't use hardware texturing.
ok u didnt need me to solve your problem:) i have some tutorials for nurbs modelling.....and patch modelling! if u want to send u via email...just tell me:)))))))) Yeah i have modelled some heads with nurbs...if u want i can send them to u:) leave your email for everything!
My e-mail is : ozangunceler@ultratv.net & ozangunceler@bsmistanbul.com

Your answer to the "Image Planes Suck!" posting on 10/28/01 was right on the money. I had been wrestling with the exact same image plane problem for many hours. I was ready to upgrade from NT to 2000 and/or buy a new video card. You really helped me so much.
FYI, I had this problem on one PC running with GeForce 256 running NT and no image plane problem on an almost identical system with a GeForce 2MX card running 2000.
BTW, I read that Maya 4 on NT does not support any background images except avi. When I put non-avi images in the image plane (tif, tga, jpeg) I get an error message but it seems to work the same as an avi. When I put a single frame avi in the background I also get an error message about a wrong frame count (or something similar). Any suggestions?
The answer to this isue, and many others, are in the Living Maya FAQ located in the Maya General Forum.
If you are new to Maya or have an issue that is easy to recreate and hard to get around, chances are others have had it is well, and chances are the question has been answered. Check the Living Maya FAQ or do a search in the forums, under something like "image plane slow" with the AND search option on.
I'm really happy to learn that it worked for you as well... For the background image thing... I am currently on vacation. It'll be ending in2 days. When I get back to my office i'll check it out for you.
On the other hand, i can make you another suggestion. If You're using image planes it's very probable that you get wierd result. So, instead of using image planes, just create NURBS or Poly planes and assign your avi or tiff or jpeg or any kind of material on it. You can assign this plane to a new layer and block it from translation, rotation or scale.
When i deal with things that require references to images, i do it this way rather than image planes. Also i found out that render is a little bit faster.
Last thing i'll mention is about the video cards. I recently bought Leadtek GeForce2 MX400 SH PRO 64MB. It has some redraw bugs. Menu items are freezing in OpenGL shaded mode. So, if you're planning to buy a new graphics adapter don't choose this one. Go for a better one...
Thanks for your interest. I'll be trying to help as far as i can
