Import Autocad Files Into Maya?

Since Autodesk is the owner of Maya now I was wondering if there is anyway of importing cad files into maya. Does anyone know anything about it? This is an old dream of mine!

Stop dreaming as a excuse you can allready do this!

Been doing this for ages. Easiest i usualy ask thethe autocad file as dxf and import that. (most auticad stuff contain nothing out of the ordinary that dxf cant handle, and DXF is a a autocad natve format!!). However maya reads in dwg aswell wich is the normal format.

Just open up the plugin manager and load the connectivity plugin. And this has been the case for a s long as i remeber.

(you could have asked even before aliaqs was bought up by autodwesk since this feature was implemented in maya 1 or 2)

I've tryed to import DXF files before but never worked! I've never loaded the connectivity plugin!

Hi everyone,

This's my first post here to this forum just joined in, so I would like to greet everybody here.

Importing AutoCAD file into Maya, is the topic I want to ask about. I know it's very possible to do this, but each time I try to import a DWG file, Maya imports only part of the file and with different proportion from the original draw, every time when the draw are imported, firstly, it doesn't apear on the dispaly scene, as it way exceeds its limits, till I give it "Fram all" command and then scale it all down. The DirectConnect plug-in is loaded in the Plug-in Manager. I also tryed to convert a DXF file, but couldn't work.

So please, If someone can lead me to the right way to import a whole AutoCAD file inot Maya with the accurate proportions, Will be much thankful.

Your units in the drawing are way different than mayas! So if your unit is inches then maya will make it 2.5 times bigger. if its M nmaya will mke it a 100 times bigger.

Its typical tough that anyting in real size si huge un maya standards as mayas made for a environmt where everythings smaller than 10 meters. The default view farems very tiny objects only. Its like watching dollhouse scale

Thanx for your reply Joojaa, so will try to set the drawing units till it's compatible with Maya units, But does this got any relevant for why it imports only part of the draw? I can see all the layers of the draw are availible & visible (and also they were all visible in the CAD file) but it only shows some part of the draw!

In Maya 7 there was a nice plugin, DWG translater, with which I imported CAD files into maya. But in Maya 8.5 I'm in trouble! It seems like I should use the new DirectConnect plugin instead of the translator, but it doesn't work! Every time I try to import a DWG or DXF file I get this: Error reading file. Oh God! I was doing this with Maya 7 for ages, what's wrong? (
