For anyone interested in importing and exporting files for 3D printing, and I imagine people would be, you are able to import STL (STereoLithography or Standard Tessellation Language) files for manipulation in Maya 2015 (and also in 2014). Additionally, you can also export your 3D model directy to STL format for 3D printing.
To do this, go into the plug-ins manager in the Preferences/Settings menu.
locate DirectConnect.bundle and ensure Loaded is checked. Click Close... that's it.
You can now import STL files as well as export in STL format right from the file Import / Export menu in Maya. Just be sure to set the filetype to STL_DC and you will be able to Import and Export STL files
