Hello all,
I just made a little(actually not) test to find out the best distro. to run Maya on.
I tried Ubuntu, Fedora 7, OpenSuSE 10.2, CentOS, Gentoo and Slackware 12, with Maya 8.5 sp1.
Autodesk says Fedora and SuSE are the most suitable distros for Maya, because of RPM support maybe?
Well, if you ever tried to install Maya to any distro, you'll find that you need to install some libraries first(like libXp.so.6) ...
Or you'll need to move some libs from Maya/lib to /usr/lib bla bla...
you'll run Maya and it'll crash ? or mental ray errors...I found these problems with all distros..except Slackware 12.
I installed Slackware last cause all the rumors that its the hardest one etc... and i was shocked..
Only thing you need to do is to run " rpm2tgz " tool, to convert .rpm packages to .tgz..
and " installpkg Maya..." thats all..No missing libraries or no need to move libs...no permission problems..
I took at least 50 renders with Mental Ray...didn't crash..using it for 5 days now..
Faster then all..simply its amazing...
anyway just wanted to share if you are looking for the right distro. to install Maya..cheers..
