Laptop Advice

I've been looking at getting one of the new mac intel dual-core laptops to do some shake work. The options were a new 13" macbook with 2gb of ram, or a 15" macbook pro which would also be on 2gb of ram but has the 128mb radeon graphics card.

I was wondering if anyone knew if shake actually needs a good video card or is it more processor power and RAM that's important?

shake will use your graphics card to accelerate the interface and your workflow, not so much for rendering of course.

the biggest problem with the 13" is the screen resolution, 1280 x 800 is not very much realestate for shake, compared with the 1440 x 900 of the 15" pro, which is a bit more respectable.

I use Shake on my Macbook pro exclusively -- good for doing work while waiting for shots on set etc. I could be wrong but while Shake will probably run fine on the Macbook, doesn't it need to higher end video card in the pro line to work to the best of it's abilities?

I was thinking that maybe I should get a nice souped-up dell laptop instead and go for the linux version. I'm really not liking the fact that all the macbooks now have integrated gfx.

errm... and spend 4500 bucks more on the licence?
doesnt sound like such a great plan to me, you can probably get a macbook pro and a new tower for that

but back to the original question, i'd be interested how the shake GUI performs with the integrated graphics as well, because i would hook up a bigger monitor at home anyway but i like a compact form when on he road..
anybody with hands on experience?

Ah! They haven't lowered the prices on the linux lic? That was a bit.... nasty. I mean, I know how they generate their revenue, but do they have to be so obvious about it?
