I've been trying to use the Mel command:
LevelofDetailGroup;
from mayabatch. Whenever I do I get the error:
Error: There is no active view.
and the LOD group is not created. Normally that command takes all currently selected transforms and creates a new LOD group from them. The distance where the LOD snaps seems to be based on the distance of the object from the camera when the object is created (the value is Threshold[0] on the new lodGroup node).
