Light Displaying Through An Object

Hi,

I am having problems with a spotlight shining though a solid object.
Instead of the light just going though the windows it passes though
the entire wall-object.

-I am using maya 7
Tested with exactly the same result in:
Mental Ray and Maya software.

-Also I create an additional block in front of the
light to test if it would block out everything but
I have the same result.

-I also add a new shader to the block just in case
it was a weird error with the default lambert.

It is probably a simple answer to a stupid question.
So thanks for you help.

select your object, hit ctrl+a Go to rendering stats...make sure cast shadows is checked...and check out the other fields..maybe they will be usefully to..

I have not made any changes to the render stats so cast shadows is enabled.
Does anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks,
Anthony

I did a test:

I create a cube and add the spotlight outside of it. If I used depthmap shadows
light will not enter the box.

But if I use raytracing shadows the light enters the box even though it is fully enclosed.

Depthmap shadows look ugly in mentalray so it there a way for the shadows to work correctly
with raytracing shadows?

Is your object 2 sided?!?! What about the shader?

Yes also the depthmap shadow quality is dependent on how many shadow samples you put in the attribute settings tab which by default is WAY too low.
