I dont believe this has anything to do with maya but rather the setup.

Wiping out the entire 7.x installation & re-installing 7.0.1 sounds promising; I'll try that.
well 99% of time reinstalling maya does nothing for you. But sure try away.
But just cheek that Mayas actually reading the profs from there because if theres some site wide system variable in place it might not do anything. And that problem would persist even after Mayas gone.
PS. one of the most annoying things ever is GELATO which every time i upgrade cayuses maya to act up unless i rename the gelato directory and set up all the system prefs anew. Mayabe your experiencing similliar issues.
I cant understand why they cant make it more grease full.
