Location Of Maya Executable?

On a Windows XP box, is there an easy way within maya to find the full path to the maya executable running? For example, we often have at least one older version of maya installed to continue on older projects in case of incompatibility problems, and I don't want to have to update the script every time we upgrade Maya, so I'd like it to be flexible.

So my script is trying to run the external program imf_disp, which is in the maya bin directory. Unfortunately, the maya bin directory is not always in people's path, so I need to run it with the full path. It would be easy enough to assume all my users use c:, and then getting the maya version (about -v) could get me:

c:\Program Files\Alias\Maya\bin\imf_disp.exe

But I don't like making assumptions about either drive or install directory.

getenv MAYA_APP_DIR but this works only on windows and linux! so mac users are on thir own.

Hmm... I didn't set up maya on my box, but this command returns:

// Result: C:/Documents and Settings//My Documents/maya //

on my box. Obviously that's not what I would expect with a variable called "app_dir", but if my box is configured wrong, then so is everyone elses where I work.

But thanks... the problem is that I can't assume (sadly) that everyone is set up correctly.

Well.. just been given an executive decision that if the maya/bin directory isn't in a user's path, it's their responsibility to put it there, so it makes my problem moot.

oops sorry its actualy supposed to give you that....

the right env var is

getenv MAYA_LOCATION; //this should work on all platforms

anyway i do think its abit confusingly named dont you think.

But cant realy thinkof anyone sane who wouldnt have maya in their path tough even if it is multiple instances of maya in path can spell toruble.

The executive decision is that if maya is not in the user's path then it's their fault, so I don't need the path.
