I've been using Maya now for oh 9 months. I really enjoy it. As I learn I discover how robust Maya is, however there are many pitfalls that seem overwhelming. For one, Lighting and most importantly my greatest weakness is Shading/Texturing. It's like a completely different program and I have the hardest time trying to figre it out. Are there any good tutorials on this aspect of the software? I've got a bunch of books that i'm still going through, and maybe by the time I finish them I'll have more of a working knowledge of that side of the software...but I've been getting so frustrated with where I'm at...so yeah any suggestions would be great.
yes actually I am. I'm trying to put together a solid portfolio over the next year or so, that way I can start sending it out to get my foot in the door for an entry level position somewhere...any suggestions? why do you ask?
breaking into this industry is very difficult indeed. i am doing this for 3 years and still no offers. my suggestions is to work very hard if you have passion. i only do 3d now for fun. i try other work which don't enjoy very much. 3d industry is too competitive. good luck.
Thats what I've heard. Hopefully, given enough time, I can creat a portfolio/demo reel that will be sufficient if not better than enough to get my foot in the door and go from there. Thanks for the advice. It's always nice to have someone encourage you on the way there. I've had such a passion to be in the business for so long that even though it's hard, I dont want to give up. Even if it takes me 3, 4 to a few thousand tries of applying or submitting my work. One day, the opportunity will present it self. Best of luck to you.
Do you have a link to your site so I can see your work?
Well, the problem sint so much that you cant get a job... but rather that theres allmost no room for medicore work. Only exceptional stuff has any market. All the other jobs are taken.
Even though I've not yet put together a reel and have not tested the market, I'm sure it is becoming more and more competitive and to stand out one must not only stay on top of the technology but one must also be on the top of ones game, doing not just the norm for reels but far beyond, being imaginative and ground breaking. I really look forward to being able to do that once I get a good handle of the software. I hesitate strongly to say mastery because one can not truely attain a mastery over an entire program such as Maya, I believe only mastery over certain aspects. In any case I'm really anxious to learn as much as I can continuing my education and eventually becoming a part of such an exciting industry.
As I progress I appreciate any feedback and advice/guidance on my path. I've already appreciated the feedback I've received on this forum. It's a great resource and I thank all it's users.
yeah I suppose thats very true. I have a friend in the game industry and hopefully he can set me up with some connections when im ready. Until then I'm doing an internship with a local broadcast station and maybe I can find a lead thru that.
