Ls returning strangely

I'm adding selected objects to a list using the ls -sl command, but when I return it I get "[u'objectname'] when I just want 'objectname'. Am I going about getting the name wrong or is there a way to record the names without the extra characters?

it would help if you printed your actual script, but:

string $sel[] = ls -sl;
print $sel;

should print everything you have selected. 
If that doesn't work, can you give a little more info on what you have selected and the actual script you are using.
