making cloth...

I'm trying my hand at cloth...what I don't understand is how you assign a solver to a piece of cloth? I have a shirt and trousers, I create a collision object for the shirt (body/arms) but when I run the simulation, the trousers want to go funny places and it all twists about and looks oh so very messy. Do I need multiple solvers or am I talking rubbish? What am I doing wrong????

Are you using maya cloth? the solver is automatically assigned to the cloth when it's created.. you can assign different solvers to different pieces of clothing to help sim certain things faster.. but in general the cloth should already have the solver attached.

Did you try and attach fields to the cloth? That can cause the clothing to go haywire if you didn't do it with a field constraint..

There are some good tutorials that come with maya unlimited that take you through creating a shirt and pants.. have you tried those?

Okay, I've got it now...but as you were so good responding to that question...here's another...
Why is it that when I try and use a button constraint and try and snap the button to the cloth by turning the preservation off and keeping everything 0,0,0, the buttons go crazy and either move to the origin or go totally mental? I've tried every combination possible, but it doesn't want to do what it should. What am I doing wrong this time??

seen that one before, too.. I THINK ( haven't done cloth in a while ) the solution I used was to simply create a locator, button constrain that.. and then parent the object I want to the locator.

see if that works for ya.

-sounds like you just needed to make collision objects for the pants/ the legs! -If you made the shirt and pants in the same scene they are most likely connected to the same solver- if you created them in different scenes and imported them to a new scene you would have to add them to a solver by transferring one garment from one solver to another- or make a new solver for them and add the cloth to it...
To add a garment to any solver at anytime all you have to do is select the cpSolver you want the garment connected to then select the garment you want transfered (doesn't matter if it is connected to a different solver) and go to Simulation>Transfer Garment. You can have as many garments on a solver as needed, the more there are the longer it takes to solve. It is a good Idea to simulate any garments that do not touch or interact with each other on seperate solvers. Only garments that touch and interact (like a shirt overlapping the top of pants) need to be on the same solver. Cloth to cloth collisions can not exist between solvers...
Maya on the other hand can only simulate one solver at a time- so using solver enable and disable is ideal to keep control. Once you've built a cache file for one solver it can be viewed in playback well you solve another...

As far as the button constraint- the locator usually does a decent job, but I generally use a wrap deformer for buttons, cuffs and pocket type things- haven't had that one fail yet...
