Making yourself stand out

Hello there,
I'm a freshly graduated 3D animation student trying to break into the industry. I specialized in character animation using Maya. I have no doubt that there are about a million other people just like me clambering for open positions, flooding studio in boxes with applications and show reels. My question to you is, how do I make my reel/resume/myself  stand out from all the rest? What sort of thing is really going to wow the recruiters? Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciate.
