Mapping a texture to the hairs color?

How do I map a texture to the color of the hair?
When I go into the shader for the hair and add a texture and a texturespace directly XSI crashes when rendering
I heard something about that you should first add a texturespace to the object and then transfer this to the hair?
How do I do this?

1) are you using 2.02 which was recently released?
2) have you used the transfermap tool? the step by steps for transfermap are in the hair addendum (.pdf) for 2.0 that is available for download at www.softimage.com
