Marking Menus

Hi, wast just wondering whether anyone would be able to help me

I have maya 8.0 and it was working fine up until recently - now the marking menus no longer show when the right mouse button is held down and I cannot select any of the tools in the toolbox panel eg. scale rotate etc.

I am used to using the mouse for pretty much everything and so i dont really like using the hotkeys. Is there anything in preferences or marking menu options etc. that i can change or reset to default to get them working again?

Hi there,

try moving the "maya" folder that resides in your Documents directory into a temporary location and see if that solves the problem. If yes, delete the temporary location. The folder is located here:

CODE
Windows Vista -> C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\maya
Windows XP -> C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\maya
Linux -> /home/USERNAME/maya
Mac OS -> {home}/Library/Preferences/Alias/maya

In case it is Windows, you rebooted Maya and the system yet, did you?

Whatever the problem is, the fact remains that maya 8.0 is just not the best to work with. I have had 4-8 crashes a day, one of which cost me 3 hours of modelling work, just cause "bevel poly" couldn't handle it. In Maya 7.0 it would have just given me a warning.

Maya 8.0 is really unstable. Use 7.0 or 8.5 if you have the option.

Have you experienced frequent crashes in maya 8.0 or is it just me?

I have also had some " UI goes crazy " situations with 8.0.

I use 8.5 for months now and it has crashed only 4-5 times overall.

Anyway, since you dont use hotkeys, you wouldn't care much if everything whas reset?
gentlesea is right, that mostly solves all the ui related problems. what happens is that maya will recreate a default UI and presets folder if it doesnt find it in "My Documents". Careful not to delete your scenes though... there in that folder too if u used the default project.

Yeah thats worked, I think I used this method before for something that went wrong but couldnt remember what had to be removed. I think my version has only crashed a couple of times since I've had it - since around january

Many people claim this haventr seen it on my machine, all machines i saw it in turned out to have bad drivers.

So no i dont think 8.0 is less stable than 7.0 infact i can do very robust testing into the matter earlier and form measured evidence id say 7.0 is not measurably more stable on the whole.

Anyway using 8.0 when 8.5 is out can be smart for a numerous reasons such as 8.5 having a broken gui for a number of things. (they are easily fixable but still)

I dont know joojaa , maybe you are right, it depends on the handling as well. I may have been a bit brutal with it. Whatever the case, 8.0 gave me a headache.

What do you mean when you say "the gui in 8.5 is broken"? What I hated at first with 8.5 is the mental ray settings...
They really tweaked those... I even made a script at first to access the memory and BSP attributes that they had hidden. Not to mention the problem that MR has with artifacting if you use FG in any geometry created with 7.0 ( at least the solution to that was a simple mel code line setting the mental ray final gather mode to 0 ).

I dont mind about the modelling bar being split, I stopped using it after a few months anyway. I got something like 15 custom marking menus and I usually hide the menubar. I prefer the hotbox layout if I want to acces a menu.

The problem has happened again, and this time the solution mentioned before has not worked. Every time I delete the folder in my documents and start up maya again it creates a new folder and the settings are the same - in that i cannot select anything from the left hand side toolbox or use any marking menus with objects.

I really dont want to reinstall maya every time this happens :S

hmm... now this is hard as you jsut decribe the syptoms.

chek your mouse diver? maybe you have ucceded in switching the buttons inside maya only? CLEAR all nomn factory melscirpts?

thanasis: they released a service pack to maya 8.5 to fix this. still didn't fix nearby all bugs.

(anyway if you dont want sp i 1 have a fix for the globals pm me if you need it)
