Masking in the composition?

I would love to be able to draw a mask for a layer in the composition as opposed to in the mask operator.

Does anyone have a trick for this?

So far I've just been drawing a mask in my background plate and then copying it to the required layer.

I know I can open 2 views and have the comp in one of them and the mask in the other. But thats kind of working indirectly.

You can use the Background button in the mask operators (not paint) to let you select any image from the tree to view behind the image you're masking as a reference.
