Matchmove Vs. Aspect Ratio

Hi all,

I'm currently doing a series of matchmoving-shots. The footage is anamorphic PAL.

If I select the correspondent setup i have the correct aspect displayed, and newly created nodes get the right aspect parameter.

Well, the matchmoves do not work correctly that is instantly noticed when the camera is rotating.

It seems to me that the aspect-handling is not correct.

The workaround resizing to 1024x576 would solve the issue - but: why are there all that aspect-parameters if they do not work?

Anyone else had/solved this problem?

Did you set the aspect ratio in the globals and inside the Matchmove node?

ok, i've taken a closer look:

the preset for PAL 16:9 nonSq gives you a default aspect of 0.685401 which will be set up in the subsequently created nodes.

i never thought that that value would be INCORRECT...

hmm, how is this value calculated? 720/1024???
that gives me an aspect of 0.703125 which in a quick test works perfectly!

after that i took a look at the manual: aha! the correct value should be 0.703235

0.685401!
0.703125!
0.703235!

what the f***!?

is there any aspect-ratio-expert out there that can tell the truth about all this?

i was about to say you should try the stabilize node instead of the matchmove as it seems to have fewer bugs, but checking your numbers the shake globals seem to be weird indeed.

here are some manually calculated numbers:

square PAL: 768x576
unsquare PAL: 720x576
--> aspect ratio: 0.9375 or 1.0667 (depending how you count)
shake globals: 0.914077 !?? -> factor 1.0256 off)

square 16:9 PAL: 1024x576
unsquare 16:9 PAL: 720x576
--> aspect ratio: 0.703125 or 1.4222
shake globals: 0.685401 !?? -> factor 1.0259 off)

i'm sure there is a reason for this 1.025.. difference, but i frankly i have no idea what it could be
so personally i'd stick with 0.703125

below a quick test i did which seems to work perfectly fine, but of course there's no "real" 16:9 anamorph footage in there so the difference above cancels itself out.
