Matte Painting Gradient Images

hello,
i keyed out a foreground and need to matte paint the background where the foreground is extracted.
i'm having a hard time matte painting the background of the image which has a gradual hue/tonal change, e.g., volumetric light and foggy environment.
what would be the best way to tackle images like these?
