Maya 2009 Uses 2gb On Empty Scene

Hi everyone,

I'm new to maya and have been working with it without problems for some weeks now but, this afternoon I got an 'out of virtual memory' error from windows (XP 64). I was quite surprised by this because, although I had maya (2009-x64) loaded I wasn't doing any heavy stuff with it.

So I checked the windows taskmanager and it tells me maya is using more than 2GB RAM on my machine (and I have only 3GB....).
So I closed the scene, but nothing changed....
Then I closed down maya rebooted windows. I started maya again but still over 2 GB on an empty scene.
I also cleared the preferences (by removing the folder in 'my Documents').
I then started the installer and clicked 'install', hoping this would fix any installation problems. It didn't ask any questions but did start copying some files (not a full reinstall because it finished fairly quick (3-4 minutes)).
Since that it does seem to use less memory (1.343 MB), but this still seems like way to much for an empty scene.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Unload all plugins! Make then not load on start up, restart. then see what maya uses. My empty maya with plugins uses about 200k of memory. But certain plugins at load do bloat maya up very much.

But yes having maya use 16-18 gigs of memory is a daily occurrence for me.

Well, I don't know what happened.....

I haven't done anything, didn't change any settings, hardly touched my computer at all lately.... And since I've reset all my settings I didn't have any plugins loaded other then the defaults.
But today I started maya and it uses 300 MB on an empty scene, which seems normal.

So I guess it's fixed (for now). If the problem recurs I'll post back here....

Thanks for at least letting a newbie know that 300 MB is normal and 1300MB+ is not.
