Maya 2016 default connection by shift dragging is broken

So I've had 2016 installed for a while and it has some neat features but it's also gotten a lot worse IMO.

For instance, I can't in the help files or doing a search online figure out how the new node editor allows you to shift or cntrl+shift or middle drag a node to create default connections.

e.g. all version of Maya using old graph editor (in my opinion was visually easier to view), the user could grab  a place2dTexture and shift drag it onto multiple file nodes so they would all share that placement node.

I cannot figure out how to do that now in 2016 with the new node editor that's is now the only choice for creating shader networks.

I just figured out how to do it, it's very clumsy and much slower than the old way,  aaargh.   But it does work and sometimes takes a few attempts.

I cntrl middle drag from the output of one node's yellow/orange out to the input yellow/orage button.  it will make default connections but sometimes bring up connection editor, if that happens; simply close CE and the default connections are made.

The older way you could drag (zoomed out) only nodes anywhere and make connections.  Much faster and didn't seem to be confused at times.

To be fare, they've made great improvements in other area like being able to highlight a node and see how the downstream connections are affecting the network to that point which is handy.  But they always seem to make a couople steps forward and couple steps backwards.
