Maya 6.0 and XSI 4.0

I just read an article posted over at http://3dtotal.com/ that Softimage is planning on integrating SyFlex in to their advanced packege, and although I appreciate the fact that Alias has their own tools to simulate these effects- fluids, hair, cloth, etc.- it seems as though there are better and faster tools out there. Why don't they take the initiative to follow suit and integrate these; a la Joe Alter's Shave and a Haircut, Syflex, Havok, in to their "Unlimited" package? I am, personally, ver partial to Maya and believe it is a better package, but I do have to take a look at XSI knowing that it has options that I will have to pay for the plug-in in Maya. Just a thought

Maya Fur is kinda hard to get rid of because the control system for it is really nice. Many packages rely on the maya fur system to control their fur(MTOR, plus many in house tools).

You can buy both of them as separate options, thats why there is unlimited and complete. I don't see the big deal, I would rather have the choice. Syflex with XSI is 9k, Maya complete with syflex is only 4k. Shave is only another 1k for maya.

Not sure why you would want Havok over maya's internal dynamics. While it is a nice dynamics engine, maya's built in dynamics covers a much wider variety of things. How many people do you know that use Reactor over Maya for dynamics?

You can still get Syflex and Shave for Maya Complete totalling less than Maya Unlimited. I mean you really ahve more flexibility with cost when these things are ala cart.

Points well taken, but on the some token XSI has always been overpriced comparitively, and the addition of Syflex hasn't drastically changed that. Maybe I'm just a little jealous because I want Syflex too.

If your jelous then why don't you just buy it for maya? It started it's life on maya, only $2200. Why does alias have to include it in unlimited in order for you to get it?

Actually a single node of shave is only like 300 bucks US now... quite affordable indeed

Have you seen the maya hair NAB demo video off alias' site? It kicks shave in the jimmy. Not simply because it works like shave's dynamic hair, but because you can use the dynamic splines for anything(cloth, legs, tails, etc...). The possiblities of this are endless.

I agree, the dynamics are useful for all sorts of thing that were difficult before. Wires, tendicles, definily tails, squid! haha can't wait to play.

Shave renders with Mental Ray, has a better styling interface and also works on SubD surfaces.

But I agree, the Maya Hair system is awesome. Just started playing with it, but like it very much. I probably will continue to use both...

So does maya hair. It only uses paintfx to render in the maya renderer. In MR it uses geometry just like how shave does it.
