You're obviously missing package(s) necessary for Maya as per the system requirements listed here ( http://www.alias.com/eng/support/maya/qualified_hardware/QUAL/maya_60_linux.htmlhttp://www.alias.com/eng/support/maya/qual...a\_60\_linux.html ). You should be able to find the gcc 3.3 RPM on RPM search engines or Apt Repository. Since Red Hat no longer supports Red Hat Linux 9.0 then I suggest installing Apt4rpm to keep your distribution as up to date as possible. Otherwise consider switching to Fedora Linux http://fedora.redhat.com/http://fedora.redhat.com/ , RHEL https://www.redhat.com/solutions/ or an alternate RPM based distribution (ie: SuSE Linux Professional, Mandrake Linux, etc).
ok now that i have the tar ball how to i get it installed. any idea?
Ignore the tar ball as it's simpler installing from a packaged RPM. Use the RPM search engine here http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/2/simple/2 to download the necessary packages you believe are missing and install. In your case open a Terminal and log in as root by typing "su" (no quotes) then press the enter key. You'll be prompted for your root password so type it and press the enter key again. Now type "rpm -i packagename.rpm" (no quotes and replace "packagename" with the name of your package). If you have multiple RPM packages to be installed you can do this simply by typing "rpm -i packagename.rpm packagename.rpm packagename.rpm". Like I said already I'd advise you to look into installing a more updated distribution and preferably one that is easy for you. I believe Fedora Core 3 is out now and is free. It's the testing ground basically for Red Hat code that is later implemented in their supported Enterprise Linux line. For an alternate RPM based distribution that's easy to use consider trying the LiveCD/DVD (demo) of SuSE Linux Professional from Novell. YaST (Yet Another Set-up Tool) is now integrated with both KDE and Gnome desktops which simplifies Linux use similar to the way you would use the Control Panel in Windows XP. You can find out more about SLP 9.2 here http://www.novell.com/linux/suse/index.html as well as Novell's other Linux solutions such as their cool iFolder. In the meantime you should find the eLibrary http://elibrary.fultus.com/technical/index.jsp useful as well the post "Software for 3D/2D Artists, Designers, etc" found here http://www.linuxforum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=53452 and my signature links included at the bottom of that post.
