Maya Cloth: Pants & Relaxing

Hey guys,

I've been recently learning cloth. I've created a high resolution human male that I want to put some cloth karate pants onto. I have gone through both digital tutors cloth and Art of Rigging cloth however both seem to avoid the problems which I'm having with my cloth so any help would be good.

Basically when relaxing my pants I have two problems:

1. The belt area a) doesnt stick to the hips, they slide right off. And b.) the verticies seem to bend and twist, generally just go funky.

2. The pants dont come to rest. They keep shifting and moving around the legs and funkyness generally seems to come through around the bottom of the pants.

I guess my question is, What is the best way to relax a pair of pants without them sliding off your model? and why dont my pants want to come to rest?

hi,

1. you must increase the Relax Frame Length. the value of this property is the simulations frames where no gravity applies on the cloth. try a value of perhaps 20. before the 20 simulation steps end you stop the local simulation and then select the vertices around the hip with a mesh constraint to the body. then set the value back to 0. and make again a local simulation, until the cloth come to rest.

2. it could be a lot of problems that your pants dont come to rest. maybe your solver scale isn

Your advice was spot on the money mate. Relaxing without gravity has solved both of the problems. I however went around it a different way. Instead of changing relax frame length I just turned the gravity off. This allowed me to wait aslong as I wanted til they reached a position I wanted. After that I turned gravity back on and I found the relaxed into a stable position.
