Maya Crashes On Startup

as soon as i start maya (7.01) on fedora i see about 1 sec of interface then it crashes takeing my system with it
no errors nothing

any ideas???

i'm on fedora 5 x86_64
amd 3800+
4 gigs ram
ati firegl v5000

think i have the drivers configred right acording to glxgears i'm getting 5000+ fps ati fglx diver version 8.25.18

had the libgcc_s.so.1 errors and got past them now if i could get it to keep runing

run Maya under gdb to see where the crash is occurring. Can't help much without knowing what is going on

do any OpenGL programs run ? i.e. run glxinfo and see if it runs.
If it does run, check to see what the OpenGL renderer string is, Mesa or ATI, if direct or indirect rendering.
At the moment the ATI driver 8.25.18 doesn't load properly on my IBM T42p machine,

Using the Mesa/Xorg default ati driver should start up, but may not support all functionality, should be better than nothing at the moment.
