CentOS does make available the option to subscribe to update channels that RedHat doesn't normally make available (by editing a YUM repository file or installing apt), but then the choice is yours to move out of the "enterprise distro" space, and you could do that with genunine RHEL too. Having extensively updated CentOS x86_64 with Redhat updates, I still had no problems with Maya 8. On the other hand, you start with the bleeding edge in FC5, which is helpful if you're looking for the best multimedia and gaming machine, but the quirks of such environments have been already illustrated.

well, it's not exactly true that if you have centos, you won't have any trouble running maya. i have centos and yesterday i updated gcc and i came across the same problem as fc5 users. and the solution was the same - linking libraries. btw, i'm running maya on fc5 also and i have no problems with it.
