Maya Not Loading

Hey all!
I've recently upgraded to a new computer from an XP. Maya 2008 runs perfectly fine on that computer, however Maya doesn't open at all on the new vista (business edition, 32 bit). When the loading box gets up to 'initializing time slider', windows throws up 'Maya application file has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly' and then Maya closes. Does anyone know what this problem could be? Thanks!

here's some information on the computer:
OS: Windows Vista Business (6.0, Build 6001)
Processor: Intel® Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
Memory: 1900MB RAM
Page File: 2692MB available
DirectX: 10
Graphics: Intel® Q45/Q43 Express Chipset (Chip type: Intel 4 series express chipset family)

Hi,
This is because Windows Vista sucks. Historically the stability of windows software is always more in the reverse order. The newer ones are highly unstable till they come out with a bunch of service packs. Linux is a much better operating system to work on.

But this is not caused by vista tough. If it si sits caused by instable drivers not vista itself. In may measurements Vista is as stable as a XP on my machine. Tough on older machines / machines with inferior components ist true you cant get the kind fo driver support.

The problem is probably in gfx card. It must not be wery good because he neglected telling about it.

And yes the requirement for your graphics card was upgraded in vista. NOw the problem is thet even if the card is capable of running vista. It may not be capable of running maya on top of that because they now fight over same resources. The problem cann probably be rectified by trying ifferent drivers.

In any case your computer si not up to running maya any way i put it to my head.

so do you think it would be best installing XP on the same machine and run Maya on that instead?

No i think getting amchine that actually would fulfill the minimum working requirements of maya would be in order.

That is a computer with:

4 gigs of memory
with a quadro fx 1800
A few terabytes of disk.

The minimal ok solution would be something thats starts with

quadro fx3700
1 raid deck
16 gigs of memory
a good motherboard
2 monitors
...

All in all a investment in teh 4000-6000$ range

Then think about the os. I mena theres lots of people out there that wonder why they have a hard time runningmaya hwn they get the cheapest possible laptop witha intel gfx chip on it. Well to be honest its a miracle maya runs on the computer at all.

It seems kind of backwards - the older pc that Maya does work on is a few years old running XP, yet a brand new computer can't open it at all Thanks for all your help anyways - it looks like this new computers going back where it came from

A brand new computer is not neccesrily better. It does not actually work like this. My 4,5 year old work computer (its still areound doing a number of automation tasks in the corner) kicks the jeepers out of MOST computers my friends have at home. Hands down, it might have a slightly underpowered processor but in all other respects its better.

See computer have evolved true. But they havent all evolved clearly forward. Buying a computer is increasingly more difficult. For maya theres 5 key components you should look for. And the gfx card is the one you should choose FIRST. All other things pale in comparasion with this choice.

nowdays they sell a mucgh wider variety of computers. They sell cheap small slim energy efficent ones, they sell lowend home user computers, midend gamer computers, highend gamer computers, lowed workstations , highed workstations.

Only the 3 latest have ANY chanc eof being usefull computer sfor maya use. Hell over half of the computers sold in at my local computer shop were running on atom chips. Theese are computers that are less powerfull than my mobile phone for gods sake. Just because the avareaghge user can buy virtuslly anything and be happy doesn't mean you can.

It's that crappy intel graphics chip that is causing the problem. Intel and Ati typically have subpar opengl drivers. I would go out and get yourself a geforce or lowend quadro.

werd.. although i wouldn't bother with a geforce as it's a crapshoot as to wether or not it might have problems as well but at least maya will open

Hi,
From what I have seen Maya is quite stable on XP with the latest service pack which I think is SP3 if I am not mistaken. The graphic card which I am using is Nvidia Geforce 8800GT. Vista is memory intensive OS & was a big failure.

Not exactly true, it actually does a lot of things faster and with less memory overhead then XP. It is however hopeless on machine with less than 4 gigs of memory, because its virtual systems dont start to kick in untill then.

Vistas biggest problem is how the OS market ACTUALLY works as opposed to how poeple think it does.

Well maya is rock stable even on vista i have now been running this one maya process for 3 monthis 24/7 and it still hasnt crashed. Mayas stability is more a result of good components that have goo drivers rather than the os itself.

Its easy to blame the os for unmarture 3rd party components. True mocrosoft has this problem while for example mac does not.
