Maya on a SGI Onyx?

beleive it or not but I found out that my company has a new SGI Onyx sitting around, I'm going to that office to try and get it doing something usefull. I have the irix maya cd that came with maya. but i've never used irix and i want to bring some of my projects that I made on the pc. can irix read a windows format cd? i wonder if I can use mental ray,, would it use all the processors? or would i have to buy mr licence for each one?

What kind of Onyx is it? What does it look like? Onyx's have been around since 93, so it could be pretty old. I used to own one so I know quite a bit about them.

Start it up and type "gfxinfo" and "hinv" in the shell and give us the results here. Maya comes with two MR licenses and I think it can thread up to two processors.

Yes Irix can read windows formated cd's but it may truncate the names depending on how you burned it. In nero if you choose and iso9660 version 2 you with joliet names unchecked. With those options irix can read up to 31 character file names without truncating them

Onxy 300, i'm going to that office to try it tomorrow, thanks for the info! how about file structure, will I have to re-map all my textures if I bring my project files?

onyx 300, very nice, thats fairly new. I was worried you were getting all excited about an old onyx 1 which would be pretty dissapointing.

As long as you set your project and all your textures were relative, then they will translate just fine. If your texture paths are all absolute then just save it as an ascii file and just do a search and replace to change your texture paths.

I found out from the SGI salesguy that it only has 6 RISC processors, and they are 600mhz. it doesn't sound very fast to me..
