Hi everybody, I wanted to ask what can seems to someone a stupid question, but... Has someone ever tried Maya on a MacBook (NOT a MacBook Pro)? I'm interested in passing to Mac, so I wanted to buy something intersting without spending too much. I think the MacBook is the best (and only) solution, but I don't konw how could graphics-software run: i'm interested in go on using Photoshop and After Effects, so... Can I do that on that kind of Mac????
And now the second part of the question... has someone ever had compatibility problems saving a maya file on a Mac and going on working on it on a Pc with the same version of Maya?
you can pass files with impunity between the mac version of maya or the pc. you do however want to follow a few basic file naming conventions (no forward or back slash in file names etc.) you'll need the same version of maya on both machines, or you'll have to cut the haders out every time and make sure you don't use specific features to the newer version(like the new cloth in 8.5).
now the crunch, the video card on the macbooks can best be described as poor. very poor, in fact. so you might want to do some testing before hand to see if you can get any performance out of it.
photoshop cs2 and after effects 7 are not mac universal so although they run on the new macs they have to run through rosetta, which makes them dog slow. you'll have to wait for cs3, for a fully functioning version.
of course you can just instal bootcamp and run windows on the thing in which case all of the above is irrelavent.
Also if you go mac consider getting shake, its dirt cheap (on mac that is) and is by far one fo the best comp apps around. Yes the philosophy of the program is capital HIGHEND but thing is its also 3-4 times faster than AE even whan the code works on same native performance level.
Its actually so cheap that you can get it side by sidce to AE without impacting your budget on bit. Also it supports maya much better than AE does.
