Anything wrong with Your Maya's DXF import?
Try different polygonal tesselation methods, when You convert text - it might help, but it sucks.
Also, if You've decided to stick with Maya, then You could try to use Invigorator plugin and Adobe Illustrator.
I prefer to do logos in MAX, because there I can interactively see and change fonts/leading/kerning.. And BEVEL modificator's best. Then convert to DXF and import in Maya and do some clean-up if necessary.
