Sure but its allways conditional and depends on the scene. (in general most people who aren't render TDs render really really unoptimized stuff usually one can optimize the render times down by really much by changing just one or 2 things), last time i got a file for optimization trough highend i cut down the rederspeed form 12 minutes per frame to 38 seconds per frame (at better image quality)
BUT rendering is by definition SLOW.
for example vray isn't all thet much faster than MR is its just more optimized for dumped crap. And quick and dirty final gather.
Remeber this: rendering is not just the time it take to start render -> end render. Its allso the time it takes for you to make the render able file form your work file. So if you move over to max in hopes for faster render speeds remember that part of the time is also to generate the render descriptor and load it. SO you can easily do a export pipe no problem but is it faster is another thing altogether.
Also remeber, sometimes its more critical that it does render out than that its fast, for example you should allways have a render dispathcer that monitors the progress, because you cant be expected to monitor the job 24/7, and if and when you crash the job at middle of the night. its a boon to have a dispatcher that actually recognizes this and render the remaining frames. Becasue you can easily loose 8 hours of working time thisway. So difference between 20-60 secs per frame eaten up here quite quickly.
(say your rendering frames for 2 mins and the faster 1 min with the more unstable non managed system and it crashes just after you leave form work and you have for simplicity 1 machine doing rendering, then that means about 10 hours so lets suppose it crashes after 2 hours, the faster renderer has now rendered 120 frames and the slower one 300, If it was a 15 second shot that'd mean 375 [pal] frames and you know what the slower one has 2.5 hours to go while the faster one has 4.25 hours still to go. Now this is reasonable since you almost always have 12-16 hours between days to render and rarely do longer than 15 secs a day)
Rendering Rule number 1:
If you dont know how the renderer works and how to get most out of it then your rendering at sub optimal speeds. Changing renderer under these conditions is waste of money.
