This is pretty much what you need to "sculpt" in second life.
In basis you create a NURB Model, from which this MEL script (provided in that link) takes in as NORMAL map data (SPHERICAL) into a TGA/BMP/JPG. this is then uploaded into second life, and with special "prims" (aka building blocks) you set them to have the normal map (SPHERICAL), (in this case, known as a sculpty).
The MEL script will also construct a file from which you can copy "data" to a in-world script which will process it, and reconstruct a NURB scene from Maya.
I personally use EP curves or NURB spheres to start the modeling.
