Maya Video Card Issues

I've been using Maya now since I purchased my 7800GT and have always had the same problem. Only now the issue is much more severe.

Whenever I would exit the program, my screen would flash to black, similar to a screen resolution change, and then back to windows again. Now that I'm installing plug-ins for the program (seemingly irrelevant to my video card), it will do this with more severe symptoms:

• Starting up takes about 1 minute with a 'No Signal' being displayed for the duration and occasional screen flickers.

-Using any tool from the shelf of one of these plug-ins causes an approximate 3 second screen flicker, similar to the one while closing the program.

I'm 90% certain that this is a video card issue. I have dl'd the latest drivers, turned off triple buffering, and changed my screen refresh rate. I'm wondering if anyone has had similar symptoms as the ones I've described. I'd greatly appreciate a solution to this, as nvidia suggested purchasing a Quadro card for 'high-end 3d software' (I'm sure they would like $2,000). My x800 worked perfectly and I'm almost wishing I had kept it instead.

cycloverid I am having similar problems. Here are my system specs.

MSI Diamond Motherboard.
AMD Athalon Dual Core X2 4200
NVidia BFG 7900 GTX OC Ultra with 512 MB is VRAM
2 GB is RAM

I have no idea what is causing it but I heavily suspect NVidia's video drivers. When I am working in Maya 8.5 one or more of the working screen will turn black. I can't get ot tp go back to normal until I reboot Maya 8.5. It is really pissing me off.

I also get video artifacts in the form of multiple repeats of my model all on top of each other. I suspect that NVidia does not support high end 3D modeling with their normal video cards. I know that ALias did not and neither does Autodesk. I wish I could afford a Quadro FX, but they are around 3,00 grand.

Just letting you know that you are not alone in this problem.

EDIT: I found this posting board of LOTS of people experiencing the same problem. It seems to be an OpenGL problem with in Maya and the NVidia video drivers. I think NVidia is crippling their lower end video cards to make people buy the Quadro cards. It is bullshit. It also seems that ATi cards experience the same problem.

Yes its true, the deciccion was taken in early 90's of making a range of cards that do not support cartain open gl feeatures, to push prices down. Theres no reason for this on modern cards but its a buisness model that will stick. This benefits highend program manufacturers with custom drivers. The price offset is off course paid up by the state in most of the western world sine business investment is tax deductible. So ate the end its a win win win situation (if your a business then the highend card costs at the end of day less than the consumer one).

Anyway the drivers aren't (in other then the feedback loop, wich is for moving renders back to hd) crippled they are just optimized for top 20 games, once every so and so driver release the driver manufacturers consolidate the assets. So you should be hunting down one of these drivers.

SO the trick is to test with older drivers till you find the one. Off course the desktop DCC cards are tested for you by the developers so they say what version to use. And yes thet usually meas slower performance, your just not paying for support here.
