since last week I've got Redhat 8 as my main OS and of course I want to work with Maya on it too G So I've grabbed my Maya4.5 CD, installed everything (no problems @ all), rebooted and tried to start it with "maya"
Maya startscreen pops up, Maya loads, Interface appears, I can read "preferences saved" in the lower right corner and WOOSH - ITS GONE!!
Immediatly after the startup it shuts itself down and I have NO idea why! Absolutely no... I asked every maya specialist I know and noone seems to know ANYTHING
At the terminal I got:
/usr/aw/maya4.5/bin/maya.bin encountered a fatal error
Signal: 6 (Unknown Signal) Attempting to save in /usr/tmp/faeroon.030103.2223.ma
If anyone knows how to solve this, has a hint or whatever - please let me know!!
Thx in advance
Faeroon
PS: I've heard that RH 7.3 hat the gcc 2 and RH8 has gcc 3 and this is not compatible to old version... maybe this is the source of the problem? doesnt want to downgrade
CPU: Intel P4, 2,7Ghz graphics card: GForce4, run with newest nvidia linux driver RAM: 1GB Swap: 2GB HD: 100GB
System: newest Redhat 8, dl'ed from Redhat FTP one week ago WM: KDE Installation: full - everything
The system runs absolutely flawless, no problems at all. Even the maya install made no errors or anything - the only thing is that maya starts up and shuts down :-/
are you running any strange themes? or just the default? try flipping over to gnome and seeing if maya will run fine. I've had it crash with some wm themes. Its a long shot but worth a try
Nope - I'm just running the default KDE, no themes, funky icons or whatever. I've just tested Maya with GNOME and Windowmaker - the same as usual Starts up, shuts down - error 6 in the terminal sighs
wasn't maya not supposed to run on newest rh but on 7.2 instead? (maybe i'm wrong). Anyway, rh modifies the default linux kernel which in my oppinnion is what causes lotsa problems on rh ) try getting 2.4.20 (or whatever is newest now) from kernel.org and recompiling it untar, than type make menuconfig, than choose your system stuff than make dep, make clean, make modules, make modules_install, make bzImage cd ~/./bzimage *wherever it is, cp bzImage /boot, add it to /etc/lilo.conf, lilo, reboot. What is your XFree86 file look like? marked out dri and the other thing like in readme for driver? Does your kernel support more than 2gigs of memory per process? (in makemenuconfig you'll see support for large memory somewhere), if not shrink your swap partition so it has less than 2 gigs when added to physical ram size. see if your c compiler is compatible with maya4.5, if xfree is compatible, if libraries are preloaded prior to starting maya 'export LD_PRELOAD /usr/aw/maya/lib/*'. Did you install openmotif or just use maya4.5's built in one? install it you got it on a cd its free and they say better than free lesstif thats available with rh, some confilicts there... did you uninstall messa openGL prior to installing nvidia's? blah blah, could be so many things )
Yep, yesterday I've downloaded RH7.3 and I'm going to test that out in about ~1hour I can't answer all your questions because I'm still new to linux but for example I did not install the OPENMOTIF from mayas CD because it tells me that the one that is pre-installed by RH is newer than the one I'm trying to install. Uninstall opengl .... :-/ Nope? Can someone tell me how to do this?
Anyway, in about an hour I'll install 7.3 and then we'll see if all the talk about maya<=>7.3 is true
afraid to tell you this, but Maya4.5 runs fine (so far) under RedHat 8.0. P4, KDE/gnome, w/ latest nvidia driver. I'd suspect that problem relies on something else..
haha the irony from a man with l337 in his name hehe anyhoo it won't likely be a kernel issue unless your using the kernels DRI or AGP drivers. redhats kernels are actually pretty solid; we have them running in several production environments at customer sites. if you'd like the most robust of redhats kernels; fetch the kernel 2.4.9-e10 source rpm from ftp.redhat.com then issue an rpm --rebuild kernelsourcerpmname then go into /usr/src/redhat/RPMS and install that with rpm -ivh kernelname.rpm you want to do a -i and not a -U to ensure that if something goes wrong; the old kernel bin image is still there. Didn't think about the lesstif thing though; that is a very good point. Might be worth it to roll back to the openmotif that A|W provides on the CD. rpm -e rpm -qa | grep lesstif rpm -ivh openmotifrpm anyway back to customer issues
When I installed RH8, there was an optional install of a second openmotif library for backward compatibility. I believe maya need this other openmotif library. If find out the name of the rpm on the cd when I get home.
I have the same problem as the starter of this thread. If you run Maya from the console, this is spit out:

/usr/aw/maya4.5/bin/maya.bin encountered a fatal error
Signal: 6 (Unknown Signal) Attempting to save in /usr/tmp/Exdaix.030109.1718.ma
Exdaix.030109.1718.ma seems to be the blank scene that is created, (the 1718 part changes since Maya makes a new one every time you load it) it creates the file with a lot of text in it, none of it has error messages in it though. It seems that Maya is having some trouble saving data to the created (and filled with text) .ma file.
I had exactly the same problem with RedHat 8.0. After many try ... i finded that is the color depth the problem... X-Windows must be set to 32 bits(or 24 bits). So, go to yours XF86Config files and change de depth value to 24.
