Mental ray cannot free memory (2)

dear all,

i rendered a scene with hair, shadow, and motion blur, but when the rendering came to the last few percent, there is an fatal error in progress report stated that "031005: cannot free memory" when building bsp.

is there anyone encounter this problem? or any resolution to this?

How memory is being used when it crashes.. on wiondows individual programs can only use up to 2gb of memory and from my experience start to have problems when they approach 1.5GB

The answer is in the log. mental ray tried several times to allocate more memory, but couldn't. After 'x' number of tries it gave up.

The error isn't that it couldn't free memory, the error is that your machine doesn't have enough for what you're trying to render. The 'free memory' message is just a generic excuse for saying the render failed.

Either you're machine is under equipped with memory, or your scene is not well optimized. You'll have to address one or the other to fix the problem.

The technical limit is 1.3 GB for 32-bit windows. Anything over that is paged. I don't know for sure, but I think Linux can handle up to 3GB.

The memory thing can have various causes (with the workarounds):

-Bad BSP settings (even more important with motion blur): optimize the BSP settings (duh).
-Too low Job Memory Limit: Try increasing it by a factor of 20 each time to see it makes a difference, but leave at least 300 Mb for the system.
-Too big textures: convert them to pyramidal .map files, this reduce dramatically memory usage but be carefull if you intend to do network rendering.
-Too much polygons. You can resolve this by fine-tuning the BSP settings and the Job Memory Limit, however if you have a LOT of polygons your system might just not be able to render it.

If you have the proper licensing you can also export to mi2 and render via command line, this is generally the most reliable way to output from mental ray.
