You cannot 'mix' materials in SI3D as only one material is allowed per triangle. You'll have to use XSI to do true material mixing.
However, you can blend textures up to 64 textures per triangle (2D and 3D) which is what I think he was referring to. If you need to only mix materials (eg - solid color), then apply the appropriate shading model (phong, blinn, etc...), then apply a 2D_Local texture atop with the proper color. Since the texture is solid colored, you can get away with a 1x1 pixel image to smear it across. To blend, use the blend slider in the 2D (or 3D) texture editor. Use the 'Next' and 'Prev' buttons to apply more textures to the same triangles.
