Modeling a basketball net?

I am currently build a basketball hoop and want to animate the ball going through, but I want the hoop to have a net that will interact with the ball. I was thinking of just making the net a soft body, but I dont know where to start with the modeling. If anybody has some advice on modeling a net, please let me know. Thanks.

acually . Soft Bodie is the way to go . ..
A freind of mine did it for a commercial and it turned out ok.
Just model the net as a bunch of extrudes , then make it a softbodie with a low amount of movemnet ..
go ahead and use paint GoalPP on the net so that you can pain the progrestion of jiggle and that way the net will stay on the hoop. Similar to the FLAG softbodie tutorial on

Thanks for the quick reply and the advice about the soft bodies, the problem is that the soft bodies is not really a problem. I kind of figured that would be the best way to go about it. Its the modeling of the net. Do you think you could give me some descriptive advice on how to model it. Thanks.

well. I can find out in detail, but for now I would go about it liek this..
Make a bunch of lines that would represent the net. Extrude them with a circle.
I will find out later or if my buddie sees this post he will pipe in I'm sure.
Try that for a bit and wait for tomarrow and I will confirm the methoud if someone else does not before hand.
Or, heck, try this..
take a then pice of geometry liek a cylinder for the net. Creeate a textue ewith a good alpha channel and then sjut hide the geomtry form being visable? wonder if that will work without having to model each stupid hole.. mm.. try it . It may work with softbodies if you set it all up beforehand.. not sure of course . i havn.t done it.

I got some reasonable results using a cloth texture as a bump map and a transparency map - I ran the alpha through a reverse node for the transparency. I decreased the U and V width of the cloth tex. and rotated the frame 45 degrees. It looks a little too "woven", though, whereas a basketball net is knotted. Once you get the concept, perhaps you can convert the cloth texture to a file and edit it in photoshop.

Suggestion:

Make the net a revolve:
Turn revolve into a softbody with a duplicate as goal.
Mmake the surface live then draw the netting on the surface with curves.
Turn on contruction history
Then extrude a profile on the curves you drew.

This way you have a net made of geomtry that is driven by the softbody cylinder. This would much easier to control than making netting geomtry and than making the netting a softbody.
