Morphin One Object In Another

Hi all,
i want to make a little animation, where a sphere will deformed to a Futuristic Step of a stair. Of cause i can Keyframe everey action on the way from the sphere to the Step, but is there a way to say ok, thats frame one, the Object looks like that now ! Than may be go to Frame 150, do the work on the Sphere, make a keyframe an say, the model looks like that at frame 150 ?

sounds like much work...You could key vertexes, edges, faces, but that sounds like much work. Depending on the shape of the stairs you could just use lattice.

Is there no possibility to key the complete Form of the object ?
