Motion blurring transparency

Hey all

I have a scene in which objects with holes made with a transparency map must be motion blurred.

The blur works fine on the objects edges, but doesn't recognize the transparency. Where am I going wrong? This has got me really stuck

I'm using Mental Ray 2.1 on Soft 3.9

Are you using 3D motion Blur or 2D? I think 3D motion blur must be activated because the 2D effect is a post-rendering effect. Im sure by using 3D, you will get what you want. Check the reference PDF files that came with Soft and this will give you more information.

Hi Knick Knack, sorry for my delay in replying, my net connection has been down

Yeah I'm using Exact 3D blur and as far as I can tell I'm doing everything right - I've read and re-read the PDFs and they were as I remembered them.

The weird thing is that the blur is working on the objects' edge, but not on the transparency mapped holes - this is what has me at a loss

a known limitation with MR motion blur is moving objects
behind transparent objects cant blurred.
in your case make sure that exact is turned on in the render setup of that object.

From response to a different post I put on this site, I've now found the cause of the problem I was having - Motion Blur works off vertex movement but doesn't recognize texture movement

Yeah, answering to my own post...

Im sorry, 3d MB works on objects behind transparent objects. But not perfectly. 2d MB not at all.
