Motion trails exsist but making them faster would require the complete redesign of maya. And mainly dumpping all thats goo din maya.. Ba cause theres no way maya can make it any faster than it is, and have the general interoperability maya now has.
The smearpainting poses is not hard to do tough.
PS maya has this path thing built in hat wors as fast as maya can do out of bounds contexts already. its in animation/motion trail, but this exposes the only weakness in mayas lazy evaluation scheme thast the CORE for how maya operates on everything. Basicaly you could decouple this for things like splines but as soon as you make a hierarchy out of it its crapped. But thing is this would berak everything else maya has. (choose animate create motion trail)
Max on the otherhand uses tcb splines wich its simple to do this except in hiearcial situations.
I understand the dependency graph evaluation problem, but It seems to me that the "animPath" plugin I was talking about is quicker than the native maya one. Maybe it's just an impression, not really sure about that. And it's ability to change the keys AND the tangents directly in viewport is just amazing.
Anyway, the ability to track also geometry vertices would be great (just tracking for those, no editing necessary of course .
