I'm trying to figure out why every time I attempt to make a displacement map of my new project I get Mudbox hanging and "Not Responding" ...
So I've finished my modeling,

BUT, I never worked out the UV mapping before I imported the base mesh. Was that a big mistake? It was my first real project where I've tried to generate a base mesh. If I haven't, am I screwed or will I just have to retopologize and sort out the UV map.
When I reduce my mesh down from level 7 (15,600,000 polygons) to level 0 the UV map looks like this;

Then I set up my map just like the video says...
http://dashdotslash.net/Mudbox2k9/Mud2Maya...-mayaFLASH.html
Then I get all 8 CPUs hung up in huge page files at 89% usage for ever till I shut them down.
So what is the solution?

OK so I managed to extract a displacement map for another model that was UV mapped so that was ultimately the problem.
So now how do I go about fixing this mess with the Renaissance coin? How do I retopologize from this point? Do I somehow do it in Mudbox or do I take 15.6 million polygons into Maya and attempt it from there (Fat chance).
