I am interested in setting up my dual AMD Tyan box for Linux as well as windows. I need to do this in anticipation of building 4 or 5 Dual Proc Xeon boxes for rendering, I do not want to use Win on the rendering boxes due to cost and performance issues.
Is red hat 9 with 7.2 compat libs the best (in my case easiest) dual boot distro for me to install? I have tried 7.2, but have had problems with the bootloader seeing my windows install - also configuing x for my video card (FIreGL8800) seems to be difficult, as I need to have an http download to get to the new drivers from ati.
Suggestions? Is this really worth my trouble? I need to set up more of a pipeline to streamline compositing etc, and I want to get away from paying the man for a lame os...
Your experiences are appreciated
Jon
Are both OS's on the same drive or separate ones?
Yo Beaker -
I have a second HD for linux -
Thanx,
Jon
ok, cool, thats an easy one to setup.
I have my linux drive as the master on my primary ide(hda) and windows as the master on my secondary ide(hdb).
Do this in your "/boot/grub/grub.conf" file for your windows drive. This might have to change a little if you have more than 2 hard drives on your first two ide channels.
title=Windows XP
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
root (hd1,0)
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
What this does is has grub switch your two drives and fools windows into thinking that your drive is the first primary disk because windows always wants to be C:.
If you want an easy installation of Linux with dual boot and a network for linux then go with SuSE Pro 9.0. The Yast installer gives you several options for partitioning and setting up dual boot systems as well as help on configuring linux networks for your render farm. See the below link.

You have had good luck with Suse and Maya? Where do I find the correct compat libs?
Thanx!

Beaker,
Thanx for the tip - my primary HD is win2000 and my secomndary is linux, so I guess I should configure as you hace stated except for the drive mapping...
I am slamming on a project for the weekend, so when I can get back to it I will try again!
PS are you using 7.2 or a newer release?
Thanx

Ok, thats cool. So you can just copy those lines I gave you exactly as they are into your grub.conf file.

I don't use redhat, but instead gentoo. It doesn't matter though. As long as you have the right libraries the software will work on it no matter which linux your using. Both use grub for booting too, so that won't make a difference either.
Thanks again for your help - I am using 7.3 at the moment, but I have considered using SuSe with compat libs, mostly so I can have a newer, more active distro...
