Not necceserily.
if you have 2 faces thet are on the same plane, then theres no difference between those faces once you deselect thus they would look like one plane wich is what they should be.
The reason you do thet is for the normals to generate a auto normal that is tactually pointing along th plane.
HOwever if you say bevel then yes i know what the reason is, its because the beveled region does not have a uv cordinate and sometimes this leads maya to draw it as transparent.
However this might also be a bug in the gfx drivers state machine. Ive seen it only once on a ati card.
