Network

I have two computers one is a 800 athalon with windows me and the other is a 400 runing nt. I would like to be able to use the 800 to render and to also store frames. How can I network the 2 computers together, both of them have network cards and stuff just need help setting it up.

To network two computers directly, you do not need a hub or anything , just a "cross-over" cable and a friend who knows something about networking. It isn't very difficult though.

The cable will run you around $30-$50. You can get them at a computer part's store. Not retail, but someone who fixes them etc.

As for the friend, not sure there. A good book would do it. If not perhaps a computer parts store that upgrades could do it for you. Perhaps those people have a book they recommend or may be able to just tell you what to do.

Note: Using a cross-over cable will be much faster than using a hub or switcher. The only catch is that it only works between 2 systems.

Perhaps someone on this forum has the specifics on setting up. I haven't done this in a while.

Hope this helps,

A very quick rundown of setting up a cross-over network:

Buy the cross over cable..... and set-up the network as follows....

For Win NT 4.0

Computer 1:
go to netowork properties--->Protocols--->Tcp/IP--->Properties

Enter an ip address anything like (192.168.0.1) Subnet mask (255.255.255.0)

Got to Computer 2:
go to netowork properties--->Protocols--->Tcp/IP--->Properties

Enter an ip address anything like (192.168.0.2) Subnet mask (255.255.255.0)

Done.....

Ohh you need to enable sharing on the drives that you want to store files remotely....

Example: C: drive on Computer 2
go to Computer 2: right click on C: Drive--->Sharing

Choose "Shared As"
Name it whatever you like
Click apply
DO the same for all the drives you want to share then check it out in network neighborhood. Or you can map a network drive.

Keep in mind this is only for cross-over cables.
If you're going to run a hub....then you'll need a different cable and possibly a different setup.

Hope this helps.
