About art freelancing, its not easy and 2 months is not the time when you quit if thst what your after.
There are 2 types of artists, commercial artists and starving artists. The later would stipulate that rest are not artists but as far as im concerned even the freaking plumber might be a great pipe orchestrating genius and I call that an art. Theres quite obviously not much for the starving artist crowd altough I do grant that the idea looks far better then what it is in my experience. The later is also what everybody, at least over here, thinks when you mention artist.
Now the commercial artist is indeed a breed on its own. There are 2 ways of becoming a successful commercial artists as far as I understand. It tried the a harder one. The easier route is based on a bit of luck, usually what happens is you get noticed in the circles during your education and get hired you then progress trough utter crap into a freelancer with their own clients. I didnt have that luxury, nobody had heard of 3d graphics where iI was coming from.
Ok so you start out with your own clients. First make sure you charge a decent price, its not for your protection its for the clients. You make sure you have a good contract termination clause, its not for clients protection its for yours. This is totally opposite to normal logic. Thing that bothered me with this approach is that i spent days upon days on trying to educate, pshycologize and deal with the client, for every day actually spending on any art. SO much so that at the end of my run i realized i HATED clients, and contrary to the mantra clients were almost by default always wrong. Because quite frankly if they did they wouldnt have hired me in the first place (they would have understood the value of paying 10,000 eureos for the stuff and be done with it, and in my current line they do mostly because the alternative is to loose a lot).
Ok so why right price, price makes them budget conscious. They suddenly understand something you will fail to educate them even if you tried, namely that every of their action has a consequence. See thing is every time your clients says lats change that and this and so on it costs you TIME, if yoru cheap they will bombard you with a lot of theese so you dont get anything done. The client is not aware thet they are over extending their time budget with this and ultimately it will make you look bad. And they will not get whet they wont. Offcourse theese types wont in any case, because thets their nature they think your scamming when you tell them that. "Umm this product has a way too long name for any decent logo stuff... maybe something abstract".
Termination because you will want to AMICABLY cut theese guys off when you do get the good ones. Its called professionalism.
Ok now the thing is theres a LOT of prerequisites to this stuff, i mean a freelancer need to know far more then the average joe in a company X. Your clients will, most likely, not even have heard of stuff like this. NA a lot odf theese stuffs you will have to set up for your client so you can even speak on the same planet. So you need experince, and failures...
So what you do is you contact your friends as mock clients, you do the whole nne jard with deadlines. Mke T-shirts,print-jobs, wedding vide titles and such with realistic deadlines. Dont worry you wont get killed (much) when you do wrong. But you will learn valuable lessons of time keeping and unexpected problems, commercial printing is hard you know (for example ever heard of color profiles? well if you havent measured the device its not going to do what its told, PERIOD. So all you nice color toning is wasted work!). After this you can decide wether or not you loke the grunt work too. The cool thing here is it goes forward into your protfolio, and hey you can sell it on a site that sells royalty free art (not to be confused with public domain art! For example at http://www.istockphoto.com/ )
How to get the correct price, spying, you find out what the competition in the area is doing. Then do something better No youd be supprised how much its not about art and more about being the right person for the jobs timely execution. Art can be crap but your clients wants it done.
