Newb Question: Need To Simplify Paint Curve

Using Maya 8. Everything I get as far as how to limit the number of CV's in an existing stroke involves "Paint Effects > Curve Utilities > Simplify Path Strokes" but when I select my curve, I can't seem to get to any of this. I don't get it in the hot menu, and I don't see a top bar for "Paint Effects". I also need to know how to change my new paint effects settings to limit number of CV's.

Paint effects is on the render menu level. (It does NOT appear when you rightmouse over a stroke)
Make sure your paint effect module has not been disabled in the prefs.
